"Act as a senior software engineer." "You are an expert marketer with 20 years of experience." "Pretend you're a Harvard professor specializing in economics." The idea is simple: give the AI a role, and it should respond from that perspective. Like method acting, but for language models. Millions of people use this technique. It's taught in prompt engineering courses. It's baked into countless templates and custom GPTs. But here's the uncomfortable question nobody wants to answer: does it actually work? The research says... it depends. ## The Mixed Evidence A paper titled "Better Zero-Shot Reasoning with Role-Play Prompting" showed [accuracy improvements from 53.5% to 63.8% on math word problems](https://www.prompthub.us/blog/role-prompting-does-adding-personas-to-your-prompts-really-make-a-difference) when using role-based prompts with GPT-3.5. That's a meaningful gain. The technique seemed promising. Then researchers looked closer. A study originally titled "When 'A Helpful Assistant' Is Not Really Helpful" [initially claimed that adding interpersonal roles consistently improves model performance](https://www.prompthub.us/blog/role-prompting-does-adding-personas-to-your-prompts-really-make-a-difference). But in October 2024, the authors updated their findings. After testing across 4 model families and 2,410 factual questions, they changed their conclusion: "personas in system prompts did not improve model performance across a range of questions compared to the control setting." The results were remarkably consistent across all personas. The "idiot" persona outperformed the "genius" persona. Read that again. So what's going on? ## The Confidence Problem On Hacker News, user GuB-42 [ran a test](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44194325) that captures what many people experience: > "I did a short test prompting ChatGPT do be an 'average developer, just smart enough not to get fired', an 'expert' and no persona. I got 3 different answers but I couldn't decide which one was the best." The outputs were different. The tone changed. But the actual quality? Hard to tell. GuB-42 raised a deeper concern: > "I fear that but asking a LLM to be an expert, it will get the confidence of an expert rather than the skills of an experts, and a manipulative AI is something I'd rather not have." This matters. When you tell an AI to act as an expert, it doesn't suddenly gain expertise. It adjusts its output style to match what expert-sounding text looks like in its training data. More confident language. Fewer hedges. But the underlying knowledge is the same. An LLM prompted as a "Harvard professor" doesn't know more than one prompted as a "curious beginner." It just sounds more authoritative. ## Newer Models Changed the Game Here's where things get interesting. Responding to that same HN thread, user bfeynman offered a blunt assessment: > "This used to work but new thinking models made this unnecessary for the most part." This aligns with what practitioners are noticing. GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and newer reasoning models seem to need role prompts less than their predecessors did. The gap between "expert persona" and "no persona" has shrunk. Why? Modern models are better at inferring what you need from context. They pick up on the nature of your question without needing explicit role assignments. Ask a technical coding question, and they respond technically. Ask for creative writing, and they shift registers automatically. The "you are an expert" prefix might have been helpful scaffolding for earlier, smaller models. For frontier models in 2026, it's often unnecessary overhead. ## Where Roles Still Help This doesn't mean you should abandon role prompts entirely. They work well in specific situations. **Creative and open-ended tasks.** If you want writing in a particular voice or style, personas help. "Write this like a noir detective novel" produces different output than a generic request. The model has stylistic patterns to draw from. **Establishing tone and register.** "You are a patient kindergarten teacher" creates different explanations than "you are a technical documentation writer." Not because one knows more, but because they frame information differently. **Limiting scope.** Sometimes you want the model to stay in character and not wander. A customer service persona might deflect off-topic questions more naturally than explicit instructions would. **Roleplay and simulation.** If you're using an LLM for dialogue practice, interview prep, or interactive fiction, personas are essential. They're the whole point. What roles don't reliably do: make the model smarter, more accurate, or more knowledgeable about facts it didn't already have access to. ## The Specificity Problem Research from [ExpertPrompting](https://www.prompthub.us/blog/role-prompting-does-adding-personas-to-your-prompts-really-make-a-difference) found something unexpected. When they compared "vanilla prompting" against "vanilla prompting with a static expert description," the results were nearly identical. Generic role assignments added almost nothing. But detailed, task-specific expert prompts generated by another LLM substantially outperformed both. The pattern: vague roles do little. Detailed roles tailored to the specific task might help. LLM-generated personas often outperformed human-written ones. If you're going to use a role, be specific. "You are a Python developer who specializes in data pipelines and has strong opinions about error handling" beats "you are a coding expert." The model needs enough detail to know which patterns to pull from. ## Gender and Representation in Training Data There's another wrinkle. Non-intimate interpersonal roles (friend, supervisor) yielded better results than occupational roles in some contexts. This isn't about the model having opinions. It reflects imbalances in training data. If "senior engineer" in the training corpus skews toward certain demographics, the model's conception of that role carries those patterns. Something to be aware of. It won't change your prompting strategy much, but it's a reminder that these techniques interact with deeper issues about how models learn. ## A Different Frame: What Output Do You Actually Want? Role prompting has always been a proxy for something else: telling the model what kind of output you want. "Act as an expert" really means "give me detailed, confident responses." But you can say that directly. "Provide a detailed technical explanation with specific examples" often works better than wrapping the same request in a persona. "You are a creative writer" really means "prioritize engaging prose over dry accuracy." You can specify that too. The persona is a shortcut. Sometimes useful. Sometimes not. The model doesn't have an identity to assume. It has patterns to match and probabilities to sample from. Understanding that changes how you think about prompting. When you strip away the roleplay metaphor, you're left with a simpler question: what output characteristics do you actually want? Focus on those. Be direct about them. The model will follow. ## Some Things Worth Trying If you still want to experiment with roles, here are approaches that have shown promise: **Two-stage role immersion.** Instead of a static "you are X," some researchers found success with a warmup phase where the model first discusses what it would be like to be that expert, then tackles the actual task. More work, but potentially more effective. **Have the LLM generate the persona.** ExpertPrompting showed that LLM-generated expert descriptions outperformed human-written ones. If you need a persona, consider prompting the model to first generate an ideal expert profile for your specific task. **Audience framing.** Instead of "you are X," try "you're explaining this to X." [Research suggests](https://learnprompting.org/docs/advanced/zero_shot/role_prompting) that audience framing sometimes works better than identity assignment. "Explain machine learning to a curious 10-year-old" vs. "You are a teacher. Explain machine learning." **Skip it for accuracy tasks.** The evidence is fairly clear. For factual questions, role prompts don't help and might hurt. Just ask clearly with good context. ## What This Means for Your Workflow The "act as" frame was never magic. It was always just one way to communicate preferences. Now that models are better at understanding preferences expressed plainly, the frame matters less than it used to. For most practical purposes, you're probably better off: - Being specific about what you want - Providing relevant context - Showing examples of good output - Describing the output format you need These beat "you are an expert" almost every time. But if you're doing creative work, building a chatbot with personality, or need a specific voice, roles still make sense. They're just not the universal technique they're sometimes presented as. The technique works best when you're clear about why you're using it. Tone shaping? Great. Factual accuracy? Look elsewhere. What prompting technique have you found actually moves the needle?
